Abscisic acid (ABA) was first discovered in the 1960s, it was originally named either dormin or abscisic acid in young cotton fruits and sycamore leaves. Since then, this hormone has been found in a large number of plant species and appears to be a universal occurrence in vascular plants and mosses. ABA plays a key role in seed maturation, acquisition of desiccation tolerance, and dormancy. In addition, ABA regulates many aspects of plant growth and development and plays a central role in response to abiotic stress.
